How Each Platform Pays Creators
Twitch — The Established Giant
Twitch has been the dominant live streaming platform since 2011. Revenue comes from subscriptions (3 tiers), Bits (virtual currency viewers buy to cheer), and ads. The standard revenue split is 50/50 — meaning Twitch keeps half of your sub money. Top-tier partners can negotiate a 70/30 split, but this is rare and usually requires thousands of concurrent viewers.
Ads pay roughly $3.50 CPM (per 1,000 views), with creators getting about 55% of ad revenue. Twitch runs pre-roll ads on channels by default, which can drive viewers away. Creators can run ad breaks to disable pre-rolls temporarily.
Best for: Creators who want the largest built-in audience and don't mind a lower revenue split. If you're just starting out, Twitch's discoverability is unmatched.
Kick — The Creator-First Challenger
Kick launched in 2023 with one killer feature: a 95/5 revenue split. For every $4.99 subscription, you keep $4.74 instead of $2.50 on Twitch. That's nearly double the income per subscriber.
Kick runs very few ads, relying instead on its parent company (Stake) for funding. The platform focuses on giving creators the highest possible cut. Tipping is direct with no platform cut. The partner requirements are dramatically lower — just 75 followers and 4 hours streamed.
Best for: Creators who already have an audience they can bring over, or new streamers who want to maximize earnings from day one. The lower barrier to monetization means you start earning sooner.
The Verdict
If you're choosing between the two: Twitch has the audience, Kick has the money. Many successful creators stream on both. Start on Twitch for discoverability, simulcast to Kick for higher revenue. If you already have a following on YouTube, TikTok, or Twitter — Kick's 95/5 split means you keep almost everything.
